Configuring Quality of Service (QoS) in VoIP applications

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is on track to replace fixed lines to deliver phone calls to homes and businesses. Vonage VoIP residential area include, Skype and now Google Voice. QoS gives priority to VoIP packets on the network bottlenecks. The point of the most common network bottlenecks, for most homes and businesses, is where the transitions of the data traffic from the local area network (LAN) Internet connection. The LAN can run at speeds of 10 MB to 100 MB (megabits per second) or more. DSL and cable Internet can have a high-speed Internet as low as 256 Kbps (thousand bits per second). In essence, the data is in transition from one freeway to 10 lanes to Highway 1. As VoIP is very sensitive to delays, it must wait its turn to enter the path of a track, an Internet connection.
QoS is implemented via a router examines each packet and ships the specifics of the head of the line. QoS can be achieved by virtual LANs (VLAN) or service code point of differentiation (DSCP) field in the type of service for IPv4 or IPv6 traffic class octet. VLAN

DSCP

The EF PHB is intended for applications that require low delay, low jitter and low packet loss, which makes it suitable for VoIP, video and other services in real time.
The main disadvantage of DSCP is any application can cause the bit to compete with EF and mission-critical traffic on your network. For example, your company can use a virtual PBX instead of a traditional phone system. Calls to the public switched telephone network must pass through the Internet with a loss of delay, jitter and packet low. A router between the LAN and the Internet offers priority packets marked with EF to the Internet. Although more difficult to implement, VLANs can provide superior voice prioritization if their computers and VoIP phones are different devices. VLAN give priority to all traffic within the subnet that the call signaling. DSCP is easier to implement, but is less accurate. However, small networks, such as small businesses and homes, install a router with DSCP traffic management is sufficient.
